Flights during strikes in Italy
What happens to your flight during an Italian air transport strike: guaranteed time slots and guaranteed flights.
Air transport strikes in Italy can involve an airline's pilots and cabin crew, air traffic control (ENAV), airport ground handling or security staff. A strike of one airline's crew only affects that airline; an air traffic control strike can affect all flights in the area it covers.
What is guaranteed
- Flights scheduled between 07:00 and 10:00 and between 18:00 and 21:00 must operate during strikes (protected time slots).
- A list of essential flights (for example to the islands) is guaranteed as well: see ENAC's guaranteed flights (Italian civil aviation authority, checked 10 October 2026).
- Your airline decides which flights to cancel and must tell you.
What to do
- Check your flight status with your airline the day before and on the day.
- If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer a refund or rerouting. Whether compensation is due depends on who is striking: check EU air passenger rights and your airline.
