When are transport strikes not allowed in Italy? Strike-free periods
The periods around Christmas, Easter, the summer and All Saints when Italian rail, air and local transport strikes are not allowed, by sector.
The rules for each transport sector set periods, around the busiest travel dates, when strikes are not allowed (periodi di franchigia). The first and last day of each period are included.
| Period | Trains | Flights | Local transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas and New Year | 18 Dec – 7 Jan | 18 Dec – 7 Jan | 17 Dec – 7 Jan |
| Easter | Thursday before to Thursday after | Thursday before to Thursday after | 5 days before and after |
| Late April holidays | 24 Apr – 2 May | 24 Apr – 2 May | none |
| Early summer | 27 Jun – 4 Jul | 27 Jun – 4 Jul | 27 Jun – 4 Jul |
| Summer holidays | 27 Jul – 3 Sep | 27 Jul – 5 Sep | 28 Jul – 3 Sep |
| All Saints | 30 Oct – 5 Nov | 30 Oct – 5 Nov | 30 Oct – 5 Nov |
There are also strike-free periods around national and European elections and referendums (from three days before to three days after the vote), and shorter ones around local elections in the areas that vote.
Lower risk, not zero risk
These are the rules; the register shows what has actually been announced. In October 2026, for example, the register listed a national general strike including trains on 30 October, the first day of the All Saints period. So treat these periods as quieter, not as a guarantee, and check today, tomorrow or your city as usual.
