Guaranteed trains during strikes in Italy
Which trains still run during a rail strike in Italy, and where to find the official list.
During a national rail strike, some trains are guaranteed by law. The details are published by each operator before every strike:
- Trenitalia (Frecciarossa, Intercity, regional trains): see Trenitalia's list of guaranteed trains (in Italian), Trenitalia's strike information in English and Trenitalia live travel news.
- Italo: strike notices and the list of guaranteed trains appear on Italo's home page before each strike.
- Trenord (Lombardy, including Malpensa Express): see Trenord's strike information.
Typical rules
- Trenitalia regional trains run in the peak hours: on weekdays from 06:00 to 09:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00; on public holidays from 07:00 to 10:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00.
- Some long-distance trains (Frecce, Intercity) are guaranteed every day: they are in Trenitalia's table of guaranteed trains.
- Trains already travelling when the strike starts normally reach their final destination if it can be reached within one hour of the start of the strike; after that they may stop at an earlier station.
- Trenitalia warns that service can change just before and just after the strike hours.

How to read Trenitalia's list
On the Italian page, Tabella A lists the long-distance trains guaranteed during strikes on weekdays and holidays. The list valid until Saturday 12 December 2026 has 146 trains. Tabella B applies only to a national general strike on a public holiday. The lists change with each timetable (June and December): always open the current one.
A row looks like this: 9613 · Milano Centrale 08:30 → Napoli Centrale 13:10. The number is the train number on your ticket; the table gives only the first and last station, so open the train in the Trenitalia app or website to see its stops.
Trenitalia notes that listed trains can still change number, time or route because of engineering works.
Italo: "not guaranteed" is not "cancelled"
Italo's conditions of carriage (article 16.1) say that during a strike, a train Italo has marked as "not guaranteed" does not count as "cancelled", so the remedies Italo provides for cancelled trains do not apply to it. If your Italo train is not guaranteed, check Italo's strike notice early and use the change or refund options it offers. Source: Italo, terms and conditions (conditions valid from 1 October 2026).
Refunds
- Before the strike (Trenitalia): Trenitalia's strike notices let you give up the trip and get a refund up to the departure of the booked train for Frecce and Intercity, and only until midnight on the day before the strike for regional trains, or change to another train. Read the notice for your strike on Trenitalia's guaranteed trains page.
- Trenord: refund requests within 30 days of the strike day.
- After a cancellation or delay: see EU rail passenger rights and our page on refunds and your rights.
